Watching the ebb and flow of the waves is entrancing but once the tide has retreated, it reveals the secret world of rock pools and the charming creatures that call these places home.
Welcome to Newquay Wild Activities! We are Liz and Laura, and we want to boast about the wildlife we have here. And we have a lot! The rockpools are teeming with life – day and night! The cliffs are a haven for nesting birds. The seas are abundant with kelp forests and the coast path is a perfect place to spot seals, dolphins, and inland species such as Choughs and butterflies and insects that live in this wild landscape.
We’ve just finished our first summer hosting rockpool rambles and it was brilliant! We can’t wait to get going again in the new year. If you love fun, have a curiosity of the outdoor world and love to discover new things, we’d love for you to come with us.
Rock pooling is a simple activity that can fill hours without you even noticing! Although traditionally a summertime activity we can do it any time.
Liz will pick you up in our minibus and take you to Fistral Beach (or meet us there). Fistral Beach is an iconic surfing beach, with golden sands.
Towards its south side though, you will find a large area of rocks with the most amazing rock pools tucked away in gullies and caves. This is where the rock pools are!
When you join one of our rockpool rambles, your guide is a local expert. They have been part of the conservation sector for years and know this place inside and out. They are also ‘Walking encyclopaedias’ on anything from limpets to bees and buzzing (sorry) with excitement to tell you everything they know.
They will intrepidly lead you for the next two hours, finding creatures and wowing you with their knowledge about them.
Liz will join you later bringing with her drinks and any delicious Cornish pasties you’ve ordered for a picnic on the beach.
Then we’ll all pile back in the minibus, and head home. When the guides get home, they will compile a species list (that we can share with you) and submit them to The Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall And the Isles of Scilly.
